šaleški akademski pevski zbor

Šaleški akademski pevski zbor Velenje (Academic choir of Velenje) was formed in 1999 and ever since, Professor Mrs. Danica Pirečnik has been its conductor and artistic director. The singers are mostly students and academics from the Šalek Valley and surrounding areas, whose musical maturity, youthful energy and the desire to continue the rich choir tradition in this part of Slovenia as well as to attain the level necessary to perform top-level compositions have launched their concerts all across Slovenia and abroad. The choir has taken part and been very successful at many competitions in Hungary, Serbia, Greece, Italy, Chech Republic and Bulgaria where they often won the highest prizes. Their success has become most evident in the past three years. In 2009, the Choir competed at the International competition in Varna, Bulgaria where it won the First prize in the category of Mixed choirs and received the Grand Prize of Varna 2009. The following year, in 2010, the choir returned to Varna to perform at the European Grand Prix. For the ten year anniversary the Choir received a plaquette from Municipality Velenje for its astonishing music achievements. In 2008, the choir released its first album with sacral music entitled Gloria; at the end of 2010 their second CD was released, containing the choir's work of the last decade, mainly folk and modern compositions. In July 2011, the choir participated in a project combining a large number of musicians; they performed Mahler's Eighth »Symphony of a Thousand«, conducted by an outstanding Russian conductor Vladimir Gergiev.
